How to Choose an Accountant in the UK

Choosing an accountant is an important decision for any UK business. Incorporation may be quick, but accounting, tax and compliance continue throughout the life of the company.
1. Check professional and AML supervision
Ask who supervises the firm for anti-money-laundering compliance and whether the adviser belongs to a recognised professional body. Verify registrations directly with the relevant organisation rather than relying only on a logo.
2. Understand who will handle your work
Find out who will answer questions, prepare filings and review the final work. Ask about their experience with your sector, cross-border ownership and the taxes relevant to your company.
3. Ask whether work is outsourced
Outsourcing is not automatically a problem, but you should know which services are delivered by the firm, which are passed to third parties and who remains responsible for quality and data protection.
4. Insist on transparent pricing
The engagement letter should identify what is included, what costs extra, payment terms and how fees change as the business grows. Clarify whether routine questions, payroll, VAT returns, bookkeeping and Companies House filings are included.
5. Confirm deadlines and responsibilities
A good onboarding process should clearly divide responsibilities between the client and accountant, including record-keeping, approval of filings and delivery dates.
