How to Open a UK Business Bank Account

Editor’s note: Originally published on 7 January 2023; this article reflects information available at that time, and rules may since have changed.

Opening a business account is separate from incorporating a company. Every bank or payment provider performs its own identity, residence, risk and business checks, and no provider is required to accept an application.

Can a non-UK resident apply?

Some banks and electronic-money institutions accept applications from overseas directors, while others require UK residence or an in-person visit. Eligibility can depend on the country of residence, industry, ownership structure and expected transactions.

Typical documents

  • Passport and proof of residential address
  • Company number, registered office and ownership details
  • Description of products, customers and expected turnover
  • Evidence of source of funds and business activity

Banks and electronic-money institutions

A bank account and an electronic-money account are not the same. Protection arrangements, lending services and safeguarding rules differ, so review the provider’s regulatory status and how client money is protected.

Practical application tips

Use consistent information across Companies House records, your website and the application. Explain the business model clearly and provide requested evidence promptly. Avoid relying on a single provider if banking access is critical to launch.
