What Is a Government Gateway Account?

A Government Gateway user ID is one of the sign-in methods used to access UK government tax services. It is not the same as the company’s Companies House authentication code.

Accounts for individuals

Individuals may use HMRC online services to view tax records, submit returns and manage certain personal tax matters. Identity checks depend on the service and the evidence available to the user.

Accounts for businesses

A business can use HMRC online services for Corporation Tax, PAYE, VAT and other taxes. Each service may need to be enrolled or activated separately, and HMRC can send codes or correspondence to the registered address.

Important security points

• Keep the Government Gateway user ID and recovery information secure
• Use a controlled business email address and current phone number
• Do not confuse HMRC credentials with Companies House credentials
• Give an accountant formal agent authority rather than sharing personal login details

If an accountant acts for the company, they normally use their own agent services and obtain authorisation. The company should still retain control of its records and official correspondence.
