How to Set Up a Company in the UK

For founders who do not live in the UK, setting up a company usually means incorporating a private limited company. You do not normally need to travel to the UK, but you do need to choose the right structure and provide accurate information to Companies House.

1. How is a UK limited company formed?

You will need a company name, at least one director, shareholder details, a UK registered office address and the company’s share structure. Once the application is accepted, Companies House issues a certificate of incorporation and a company number.

2. How much does it cost?

The total cost depends on the incorporation service and any extras you need, such as a registered office, mail handling, bookkeeping, VAT registration or ongoing accounting. Ask for a written quotation that separates one-off and recurring fees.

3. How long does it take?

Many straightforward applications are processed quickly, but identity checks, unusual company structures or requests for more information can extend the timetable.

4. Which documents are normally required?

Expect to provide proof of identity and proof of residential address for the people who own or control the company. Banks, payment providers and accountants may ask for additional evidence as part of their own compliance checks.

5. Do I need a UK address?

Every UK company needs an appropriate registered office address in the UK jurisdiction where it is incorporated. A professional registered-office service may be suitable if you do not have your own premises.
